After serving 38 years in prison for a crime he did not commit, an American resident was released as a result of DNA analysis.

Qazet.az reports that "Los Angeles Times" reported on this.

So, in 1983, 30-year-old Roberta Weidermeier was robbed, raped and shot dead in the evening in Inglud, California, on her way to a supermarket. A little later, the woman's body was found in the trunk of her stolen car.

The deceased's wife and friend saw someone driving the stolen car. As a result, 69-year-old Maurice Hastings was accused of killing the woman and her friend.

No final decision was reached in the first trial. The second trial lasted four months and more than 100 witnesses were interrogated and about 300 pieces of evidence were examined. After two weeks of deliberation, the jury found the man guilty of murder. In 1988, he was sentenced to life in prison without parole. Hastings has maintained his innocence from day one and is being tried for someone else's crime.

As another proof, the presence of male sperm in the woman's body was shown. In 2000, Hastings first requested a DNA test, but the prosecution denied the request. As a result, the DNA test was conducted after another complaint by Hastings. The results showed that the biological material found did not belong to him.
