Minister on measures to have carpets, stolen by Armenians from Shusha, retrieved

"We have made our claims at UNESCO, noting that this heritage belongs to Azerbaijan. This issue should be discussed at the international level."

"There are various international instances and conventions for the return of exhibits and carpets stolen by Armenians from the Shusha Museum. But, unfortunately, there are no binding provisions," Azerbaijan's Minister of Culture Anar Karimov told Qazet.az.

He said that there are gaps in international conventions on the issue: “These documents do not have a mechanism for international organizations to take back stolen exhibits from any country. In any case, it is very important to raise and promote this issue at the international level. We are doing it.

"The most important organization responsible for this is UNESCO. There is a convention that prohibits illegal extractions, misappropriation of cultural property from any country, and so on. Both we and Armenia are members of this convention. As a country that has joined this convention, we have made our claims at UNESCO, noting that this heritage belongs to Azerbaijan. This issue should be discussed at the international level.”
