FIFA is considering three options for the format of the 2026 World Cup.
According to Qazet.az reports this was announced by Arsen Wenger, the head of the global development department of the higher football institution.
The French specialist said that the format of the 48 teams that will compete in the competition, which will be jointly hosted by the USA, Mexico and Canada, has not yet been decided: "At the moment, there are three options regarding this matter. The first is the formation of 16 groups of three teams, and the top two in the groups advance to the playoffs. However, 12 groups of four teams each are also possible. Another possibility is the division of nationalities into two parts. In this way, six groups of four teams can be formed in each part.
According to Wenger, the decision will be made next year: "The FIFA Council will make the final decision, not me. Probably, the regulation will be approved next year."
