It will be Obama's first visit to Scotland since 2017 when he delivered a speech in Edinburgh in front of business leaders and politicians and played a round of golf at the Old Course in St Andrews.

During his visit he promised to come back to enjoy the "full Scottish experience".

He said: "I promise you I will be back because, unless it is raining and blustery, I will not feel I have got the full Scottish experience."

Ahead of his appearance the ex-US leader recorded a video message where he said he was looking forward to seeing youth activists make their voices heard about the climate crisis.

He said: "From the perspective of the Obama Foundation, one of the things I’m most excited about is to see the young activists from around the world who are taking up the baton and not just working in their own countries, but now forming a collective movement across borders to tell the older generation that has gotten us into this mess that we all have an obligation to dig our way out of it.
