Greece to build fence along entire border with Turkey
Along the Evros River (another name is Maritsa), which is the border of Greece and the EU countries with Turkey, a fence will be built along the entire length of the border, Greek Citizens Protection Minister Takis Theodorikakos said on Skai TV channel. According to him, the construction of the first 35 km of the barrier will begin "immediately", and the total length of the fence will be about 140 km.
According to the minister, it is planned to allocate 100 million euros for the construction of the first section of the fence. After the official approval of the Ministry of Defense, a "quick and immediate competition" will be announced to find a contractor organization that will take on the construction.
Theodorikakos also said that in 2022, the Greek police prevented 256,000 illegal immigrants from entering the country illegally and arrested 1,300 transporters of people. According to him, the construction of the fence is one of the measures that should put an end to illegal immigration.
