Mehriban Aliyeva addressed a letter to the Director General of UNESCO to terminate her activities as a goodwill ambassador

The First Vice-President of Azerbaijan, Mehriban Aliyeva, addressed a letter to UNESCO Director-General Audrey Azula in order to terminate her activities as a goodwill ambassador of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO).

Qazet.az reports that the National Commission of Azerbaijan for UNESCO released information about this.

In the letter, the importance of numerous joint projects with the organization during his activity as a goodwill ambassador since 2004 in the field of developing cooperation between Azerbaijan and UNESCO, promoting the values and principles of UNESCO was brought to attention. In this regard, the Framework Agreement signed between Azerbaijan and UNESCO in 2013, the relevant Azerbaijan-UNESCO Trust Fund, support for projects implemented in a number of countries in the fields of cultural heritage protection, girls' education, gender equality and other measures were mentioned.

The letter also provided information about the policy and vandalism carried out by Armenia against the cultural heritage and historical monuments of Azerbaijan during the almost 30-year occupation period.

At the present stage, it was emphasized that the First Vice-President is actively involved in the large-scale restoration and revitalization of the region after the liberation of our territories from the long-term occupation as a result of the Patriotic War, and taking into account his special role, it is impossible for him to fulfill the duty of UNESCO's goodwill ambassador.

In connection with the above, hopes were expressed for the soon organization of a UNESCO mission to the territories freed from occupation in order to assess the damage caused to the cultural heritage of Azerbaijan as a result of the occupation of Armenia.

In the addressed appeal, it was pointed out that Azerbaijan will continue to maintain the basic principles of UNESCO and promote the development of cooperation with the organization.
