It should be noted that the German cardinal and theologian Joseph Ratzinger was elected Pope of Rome in 2005 after the death of his predecessor John Paul II, taking the name Benedict XVI. In 2013, he became the first pontiff to renounce the papacy in 600 years. Benedict, who was 85 years old at the time, explained his decision by the lack of power to rule the Catholic Church.

Benedict XVI spent the last years of his life as Pope Emeritus in a former monastery building on the Vatican grounds.
