Thus, at least 24 journalists were killed in the line of duty in 2021, and the exact circumstances of the deaths of 18 more journalists are unknown. In 2021, 19 journalists died in the line of duty, 3 in the "hot spot" and 2 in street protests.
For comparison, human rights activists said 280 journalists were arrested in 2020.
China has the highest number of journalists arrested (50). It is followed by Myanmar (26), Egypt (25), Vietnam (23), Belarus (19), Turkey (18), Eritrea (16), Russia (14), Saudi Arabia (14), and Iran (11). This case was not observed in the United States and Western Europe.
