The chairman of the US Senate did not discuss the proposal to allocate additional military aid to Egypt
Patrick Leahy, acting chairman of the US Senate, refused to debate the proposal for additional military aid to Egypt.
Qazet.az reports that the information was spread by "Reuters".
It was reported that P. Leahy rejected the State Department's offer of additional military aid to Egypt in the amount of 75 million dollars.
Emphasizing that this is a serious issue, P. Lehi also reminded that the situation regarding political prisoners in Egypt is deplorable.
Noting that they cannot break the law due to other political considerations, he said: "It is the duty of all of us to follow the law and properly protect the rights of the accused, whether here or in Egypt."
According to reports, the approval of this proposal was dependent on the terms of the law passed by Congress in 2021. Under that document, the Senate Appropriations Committee has the authority to legislate spending, including financial aid to Egypt.
In addition, human rights organizations accuse the government of Egypt's head of state, General Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, of persecuting dissidents, torturing them and other opponents, as well as illegally imprisoning them.
It should be noted that Egypt receives 1.3 billion dollars in military aid from the United States every year.
